If you are considering trying out an AI chatbot, ChatGPT and Gemini are two of the most prominent options available today. However, they are distinct services. For instance, while ChatGPT focuses on delivering the most powerful models possible, Gemini prioritizes deep integration within the Google app ecosystem and a broader range of features. That is just one significant difference. Having spent years testing both platforms, I am here to compare them across several key categories—from context windows and image generation to platform support—to help you decide which one is right for you.

Both ChatGPT and Gemini offer free versions that restrict access to certain features and models. Premium subscriptions start at $8 per month for ChatGPT Go and $4.99 per month for Google AI Plus. While both chatbots support similar capabilities, such as web searching, image generation, and deep research, Gemini plans provide a much stronger value. They include Google Drive cloud storage, starting at 15GB for free, along with a robust suite of integrations across Google apps and video generation tools.

The higher-priced tiers for both services unlock advanced models, increased usage limits, and specialized features, such as complex reasoning models in ChatGPT Plus ($20 per month) or Google’s Antigravity coding app in Google AI Pro ($20 per month). The right choice depends on your specific goals and how frequently you intend to use the AI. Consequently, I cannot label any single plan as the definitive best for every user.

You can access both ChatGPT and Geminio offers desktop applications for macOS and Windows, as well as an official Google Chrome extension. Gemini provides a macOS app, and some of its features are accessible through the Google app on Windows, in addition to its native integration within Chrome. While ChatGPT’s coding interface is built into its main application, Google maintains a separate Antigravity app for coding tasks

ChatGPT is also accessible through other channels, such as Siri. As noted, Gemini is integrated across various Google services, including Docs, Drive, Gmail, Maps, Calendar, Keep, Photos, Sheets, and YouTube Music. Both models appear on third-party sites like Perplexity, though you will find the most features within their dedicated apps and web portals. While OpenAI does not produce much hardware, Google integrates Gemini into its Chromebook Plus laptop line and has future plans for Google Books.

The interfaces for both chatbots remain consistent across platforms. They are user-friendly and avoid overwhelming you with excessive toggles or options. That said, ChatGPT provides more settings for customization, including the ability to adjust the personality of its models during a conversation.

ChatGPT’s current model lineup, the 5.6 series, consists of three primary versions: Luna, Terra, and Sol. Luna is designed for speed and efficiency, Terra offers a balanced, midrange intelligence, and Sol serves as OpenAI’s most capable model. Once you select a model, you can further tune its intelligence to find the perfect balance of power and efficiency for your specific prompt.

Gemini provides both Flash and Pro versions of its models. Flash is optimized for speed and simpler tasks, whereas Pro is a complex reasoning model designed for more demanding challenges. While you cannot adjust the intelligence levels within the standard Gemini interface—a feature available in the Antigravity app—you can enable extended thinking for both Flash and Pro models to handle difficult prompts.

At the time of writing, GPT-5.6 is the latest series for ChatGPT, while Gemini’s newest model is 3.7 Flash. Below, you can see how these models handle different prompts.

Both ChatGPT and Gemini can easily search for up-to-date information on the web. However, you generally receive deeper, more accurate responses from ChatGPT than from Gemini’s Pro model. For example, when I asked Gemini 3.1 Pro (with extended thinking enabled) to explain the current meta for The Finals, it provided incorrect information, unlike ChatGPT.

As part of their web search functionality, both chatbots can assist with shopping. If you request buying advice, they both display clickable tiles with links to retailers. Neither is particularly great at using a photo of yourself to virtually try on clothing. This feature is of limited utility, as it helps with the visual look but fails to account for the actual fit.

ChatGPT and Gemini are both capable of generating reports that span dozens of pages and include extensive data. When asked to research which microwave to purchase, neither had difficulty creating in-depth reports that compared various options across multiple categories.

Gemini’s report interface is easier to navigate. It includes quality-of-life features that ChatGPT lacks, such as a one-click option to export reports directly to Google Docs. The quality of the reports is generally comparable, with both chatbots occasionally outperforming the other. Gemini can complete research more quickly, though not always. In general, I prefer the reports from ChatGPT, but my colleague Lance Whitney prefers Gemini’s, suggesting that the utility of each is a matter of personal preference.

The image generation technology in both ChatGPT and Gemini ranks among the best available, whether you are creating simple images, narrative-driven comics, or complex diagrams containing text. Errors and distortions are minimal. However, when it comes to AI image editing, Gemini tends to preserve the original image’s color better and introduces fewer artifacts, though this sometimes results in increased blur.

ChatGPT no longer supports video generation, having shut down its Sora model. Gemini’s Omni and Veo models continue to perform exceptionally well, producing realistic videos with audio. You can even utilize Veo’s Flow tool to extend generated clips and build more cohesive scenes. Gemini’s video generation is not perfect, however, so you may need to refine your prompt across several generations to achieve the desired result.

Both ChatGPT and Gemini can process a wide range of file types. Whether you need them to edit a resume, answer questions about a manual, or analyze an image, neither service disappoints. However, image recognition is a notable strength of ChatGPT, which can interpret complex images more effectively. For instance, when I provided both bots with a photo of my computer’s internals, ChatGPT identified more components with greater specificity than Gemini.

Both chatbots occasionally fabricate quotes from provided documents or misinterpret images, so it is important to verify their results.

ChatGPT (first slide) and Gemini (second slide) can both generate competent poems, stories, plays, and other creative content. Keep in mind that chatbot writing often feels generic due to repetitive word choice, topic selection, and phrasing. For example, I asked both ChatGPT and Gemini to write a free-verse poem, and both chose to write about the interior of a house, mentioning rain and streetlights in the first few stanzas.

Gemini can handle most physics, math, and computer science questions with ease and competently show its work. However, Gemini’s complex reasoning models do not quite match the intelligence of ChatGPT’s, which consistently think more deeply and provide higher-quality answers. Whether this is a problem depends on the specific prompt. Both chatbots can and will provide incorrect answers, so double-checking their work is vital if you are working on anything important.

Gemini impresses with its speed when coding, but otherwise, it cannot keep up with ChatGPT. ChatGPT’s models, such as GPT-5.6 Sol at the highest intelligence setting, are significantly more intelligent than Gemini’s and can complete complex coding tasks with fewer errors. Beyond simple tasks, I do not recommend relying on Gemini’s models for coding unless you are an experienced programmer who can properly oversee the output.

ChatGPT integrates with many consumer apps, such as Slack and Google Drive, as well as professional tools like Monday or GitHub. Essentially, you can prompt GPT regarding information and data stored within these applications.

Meanwhile, Gemini is built directly into Google’s apps, making it more convenient. Whether you want to ask a question about a shared Chrome tab, receive help editing an essay in Google Docs, get ideas for a new YouTube Music playlist, unlock personal insights in Gmail, or upgrade your YouTube viewing experience, Gemini can handle it all. It is difficult to overstate the power and comprehensiveness of Gemini’s integrations.

Gemini Spark is not perfect, but it is my favorite AI agent to date, thanks to its impressive speed and performance. Because Spark can leverage Gemini’s Personal Intelligence and access information across your connected Google apps, it serves as an invaluable tool for automating tasks. Meanwhile, ChatGPT recently discontinued its AI agent.

ChatGPT’s context window reaches up to 400,000 tokens on its highest-tier plan, and the more expensive the plan, the higher your weekly usage limit. However, text chat with ChatGPT is technically unlimited, provided it remains “reasonable.”

Gemini has a similar weekly usage cap but offers a context window of up to 1,000,000 tokens. Generally, if you are not coding, you likely will not need an expensive plan for either chatbot to use it as much as you want. However, it is much easier to hit usage limits on the free plans for either service.

Privacy on ChatGPT and Gemini is a mixed bag. Both collect significant amounts of data, including all your chats, and use that information to train their AI models by default. However, both services allow you to disable this training. Google, at least, does not collect and use Gemini data for training purposes in Workspace apps by default. Both Google and OpenAI have histories involving leaks, hacks, and other digital issues, so I strongly caution against sharing highly sensitive information with either.

Although ChatGPT and Gemini are both quality chatbots with impressive specialties, the former wins this comparison. Between ChatGPT’s peerless response quality, excellent file recognition capabilities, and unbeatable coding tools, it is decidedly the most technically advanced AI service I have tested. Other aspects, such as its competitive image generation features and robust third-party app integrations, also solidify its status as the chatbot to beat. Still, Gemini is objectively a much better value, with deep connections across Google’s ecosystem and class-leading video generation abilities. If you spend significant amounts of time in the Google apps, Gemini could well be the better chatbot for you.
