Bicycles of all varieties, including e-bikes, were impacted by the Trump administration’s tariffs that took effect on April 2, 2025. Consequently, manufacturers increased their retail prices.
Following the Supreme Court’s 2026 ruling to strike down those tariffs, major brands like Trek, Specialized, and Marin filed lawsuits in the Court of International Trade to recoup paid tariffs, interest, and legal costs. While the legal outcome remains uncertain, prices currently remain elevated.

Class 1 bikes offer pedal-assist up to 20 mph, meaning the motor only engages while the rider is pedaling. These models do not feature a handlebar-mounted throttle.

While the top-rated bikes in our tests tend to be the most expensive, they remain well below the $6,000 to $7,000 price points found at some specialty shops. Note that costs can be significantly higher for niche specialty e-bikes.
We have observed that a wider range of gears improves the riding experience when the battery dies and you must rely solely on pedaling. Single-speed bikes lack this versatility. Depending on the design, electric assist is delivered either through a rear-wheel hub or a mid-drive system located at the bottom bracket. Mid-drive models are generally more responsive and utilize the bike’s gearing, which helps conserve battery life on hills and long trips. Road bikes typically feature lightweight frames, narrow tires, and drop-down handlebars that encourage an aerodynamic posture. Like traditional road bikes, electric versions use slim, lightweight components to maximize efficiency. The electric motor allows riders to cover greater distances and tackle steeper climbs with less fatigue than on a standard bicycle.
Pros: These bikes are lightweight and built for speed, allowing you to travel further or climb steeper hills while still getting a good workout.
Cons: These models are often expensive, and the aggressive riding posture may be uncomfortable for some cyclists.
With robust frames, large tires, and front suspension forks—sometimes paired with rear suspension—mountain bikes are designed to handle logs, rocks, and rough trails. While the downhill portion of mountain biking is thrilling, the climb up steep, loose terrain is physically demanding. Adding an electric motor makes mountain biking accessible to those who want the excitement without the extreme physical exhaustion.

Having a folding bike is a significant advantage when you need to get around quickly without driving or walking.
Cons: Lighter models that fold down compactly often do not ride as smoothly as larger bikes with sturdier frames and bigger wheels. Furthermore, the electric assist adds substantial weight, making the bike more difficult to lift and carry.
Take your time to find a model that fits your body and your long-term requirements. If you live in a hilly area, consider a bike with a wider gear range to conserve both your energy and the battery. Always check local laws to understand where you are permitted to ride and what requirements exist for e-bike operation in your area.
Several newer companies, such as Blix and Rad Power, specialize in e-bikes. While you may not recognize these names, some are strong, innovative companies with quality customer support. Be cautious of internet-only brands that might not be around in the future to provide service. It is wise to exercise diligence if you choose to look beyond established brands like Trek, Specialized, and Cannondale.
We generally advise against buying bikes from big-box retailers. The staff there are rarely bicycle experts, which can lead to issues with assembly and repairs. You might end up spending any money you saved on trying to fix a budget bike. Many local bike shops will refuse to service models from big-box stores due to their poor build quality.
Another option is buying directly from a manufacturer, but this requires final assembly, such as attaching the pedals, seatpost, and handlebars. You will need some mechanical skill and specific tools, such as a torque wrench and hex keys. Setting up disc brakes so they don’t rub can be particularly challenging. You can take the bike to a local shop for assembly, but there will be a fee.
That said, most bike shops sell e-bikes, and their staff are usually highly knowledgeable. They can provide valuable assistance in helping you make an informed purchase.
We always recommend test-riding a bike before buying to get a feel for how it handles, shifts, and brakes. A dealer can also customize the fit for you. Some shops offer rentals, which allow for an extended ride on the terrain you plan to frequent. Even if the rental isn’t the exact model you want, it provides valuable seat time to help you decide which style of e-bike is right for you.
Once you have chosen your model, remember that it can—and should—be customized. Your points of contact—the saddle, pedals, and handlebar grips—are essential for control and comfort. All parts should be adjusted to fit your body; for example, a new stem can bring the handlebars closer to your torso. A dealer can also add accessories that might not be included, such as a luggage rack, phone mount, water bottle holders, fenders, or lights. The most important factor is getting the fit correct.
If you haven’t bought a new bike in a while, you might be surprised by the cost. Bicycles, especially electric ones, are significant investments. Additionally, tariffs on imported parts and bicycles have contributed to higher prices.
Some bike shops offer layaway plans, allowing you to make a down payment and pay off the balance in installments while the store holds the bike.
There are also “buy now, pay later” options, though you should carefully consider potential interest rates before committing. A major finance company, Affirm, offers some 0 percent options, but interest rates can range from 10 to 30 percent. A competitor, Klarna, often provides a “pay in four” plan with 0 percent interest over four months. These banks often make money because merchants or brands, such as Peloton, cover the finance charges to move inventory rather than profiting from the interest itself.
While e-bike electronics and batteries are generally safe, a faulty battery or charger can cause a serious fire, leading to injury or death. In New York City, where e-mobility devices are common, lithium-ion battery fires have become a growing concern, largely due to the use of improperly tested batteries and parts. A CR investigation found that these untested products are a primary contributor to fire hazards.
When choosing an e-bike, we strongly recommend purchasing only bikes and replacement batteries that have been tested by Underwriters Laboratory (UL) or another nationally recognized laboratory to avoid serious safety risks.
The New York City Fire Department provides several safety tips for e-mobility devices:
Purchase an e-bike certified by a recognized testing organization, such as UL. This applies to all devices powered by lithium-ion batteries.
Adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions regarding storage and charging.
Never leave an e-bike charging unattended, and ensure the bike does not block your primary exit from your home.
If you notice odd noises, leaking, a change in color or shape, or an odor coming from the battery, stop using it immediately.
If the battery reacts alarmingly and it is safe to do so, move the device away from flammable materials and call 911.
Store devices and batteries at room temperature, away from any flammable items.
Do not use aftermarket batteries.
We cannot emphasize enough that you should always wear a helmet. It is the single most effective way to prevent death or serious injury while riding any bicycle. Gloves can protect your hands during a fall and help absorb vibrations, while polycarbonate glasses shield your eyes from pebbles and insects. There are many ways to customize an e-bike. A shop might swap certain components for little or no cost, but you should factor potential upgrades into your budget. Adding a headlight, taillight, bell, or phone mount is simple, and shops may install these for free. However, replacing a stem or seat can cost anywhere from $30 to over $200, excluding installation fees.

Weight: In our testing, we found that Class 1 e-bikes are the lightest, ranging from 34 to 65 pounds. Class 2 e-bikes are generally heavier, weighing between 47 and 83 pounds. Folding e-bikes range from 37 to 73 pounds, and mountain e-bikes weigh between 51 and 56 pounds (though our sample size for mountain bikes is smaller).
Before buying, evaluate the bike’s weight to ensure you can handle it. You should also confirm that the weight is compatible with standard bike racks to avoid issues during transport.
Speed: E-bike classifications determine the top speed, and our testing evaluates how much effort is required to maintain that speed. We also assess how easily a rider can shift between different throttle or assist settings.
Maintenance: Consider the long-term maintenance costs and confirm that local shops are willing to service your e-bike. It is important to understand how often components like brake pads and chains need replacement and to be aware of how quickly motors and batteries may degrade.
You should also plan for what you can handle at home. Assess the ease of routine maintenance and ensure you have access to clear instructions for long-term care.
Comfort: An improper fit, particularly regarding the seat, can cause pain or discomfort and make riding less enjoyable. A bicycle retailer can help fit the bike to your body, a service not available at big-box stores. They may charge extra for a comprehensive fitting session, but it is a wise investment, especially if you plan to ride frequently. Spending money on a 30- to 60-minute session is well worth it.
Brakes: Hydraulic brakes are generally preferred over mechanical disc brakes because they offer a better feel and increased control. They are typically more powerful and automatically adjust for wear. However, if hydraulic brakes require bleeding, they are more complex to repair than mechanical versions.
Controls: When evaluating controls, we assess the usability of the computer system or dashboard, as well as the visibility of the display when wearing polarized sunglasses.
