Hemp Seeds Review & Top Picks

Hemp Seeds Review & Top Picks

What did CL’s hemp seed tests find?

ConsumerLab evaluated six popular brands of organic, hulled hemp seeds and discovered that two were contaminated with mold at levels nearly 3X and 9X higher than the accepted spoilage threshold. Consequently, these products were not approved. The remaining items passed the assessment, and the findings indicated that price was not a reliable indicator of quality, with the cost per 3-tablespoon serving ranging from 61¢ to $1.55.

Fortunately, none of the tested products showed signs of contamination from microbes such as E. coli, Staph, Salmonella, or Listeria. Furthermore, all samples remained within safety limits for heavy metals, including lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury, and contained the listed nutrients within an acceptable margin of error.

Which hemp seed product came out on top?

Among the brands that met quality standards and received approval, CL designated one as its Top Pick. This product contained no detectable yeast or mold and was priced more competitively than most of its rivals.

The hemp seed products evaluated in this review include 365 Organic Hemp Seed, Bob’s Red Mill Hemp Seed Hearts, Kirkland Signature Organic Hemp Hearts, Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts, Terrasoul Superfoods Hemp Seeds, and Trader Joe’s Organic Shelled Hemp Seeds.

What are hulled hemp seeds (hemp hearts)?

These are the soft, edible kernels found inside hemp seeds. They are small, possess a mild nutty flavor, and are packed with healthy fats and protein. When fresh, they offer a pleasant, chewy texture that makes them a convenient addition to various meals. They are also rich in minerals, providing approximately 50% of the Daily Value for magnesium in every 3-tablespoon serving.
