Shopify and Squarespace represent two distinct philosophies in the world of website creation. Shopify is built primarily for eCommerce, offering a robust suite of tools for merchants looking to sell products or services online. Conversely, Squarespace is designed as a versatile website builder that includes eCommerce as one of several features, alongside options for personal blogs, portfolios, and standard business sites.
I conducted a side-by-side evaluation of both platforms in August 2026, analyzing their pricing structures, usability, template libraries, marketing capabilities, performance metrics, and customer support.
Read through this Squarespace vs. Shopify comparison to gain the insights needed to select the platform that best aligns with your goals.
Shopify and Squarespace are designed for different objectives. Shopify provides industry-leading tools for building online stores, whereas Squarespace is better suited for portfolios, creative sites, or blogs, offering a more streamlined eCommerce experience. Ultimately, Shopify remains the superior choice when evaluating the two platforms based on their eCommerce functionality.

In this August 2026 update, I fact-checked information about both providers, updated any outdated information, and answered some popular questions about the providers in FAQ.
10/15/2025, 1:04 PM
In the October 2025 update, I reviewed both providers’ templates and customer support based on the most recent tests. In the customer support section, Shopify is now the winner.
Squarespace provides four premium tiers, with entry-level plans starting at $9.50/month. Shopify also offers four plans, though they carry a higher starting price of $39.00/month. You can access even better rates on Squarespace by using our exclusive coupon code CNSQUARESPACE10.
While Squarespace is the more affordable option, it is worth noting that it generally avoids transaction or processing fees (with the exception of the Basic plan), whereas Shopify applies transaction fees across all of its tiers.
These are the Shopify subscription options:
Basic
$39.00/month
Provides all the essential elements for creating a new online store and charges a 2.9% + 30¢ card rate.
Shopify
$105/month
5 staff accounts, professional reports, international pricing, more shipping options, and a lower (2.7%+30¢) card rate.
Advanced
$399/month
Third-party calculated shipping rates, up to 15 staff accounts, and an even lower (2.5% + 30¢) card rate.
Plus
$2,300/month
40x higher checkout capacity, 24/7 priority support, unlimited staff accounts, highest API rate limits, customizable checkout, and even lower card rate (2.25% + 30¢). Supports 200 inventory and POS locations, global selling in 50 markets, and wholesale/B2B sales.
You can learn more about Shopify plans and how they work in the dedicated Shopify pricing review.
Squarespace offers 4 affordable plans, of which 3 do not apply transaction fees:
Basic
$9.50/month
Free custom domain, unlimited bandwidth and storage, and SSL security 2.9% + 30¢ card rates
Core
$14.50/month
Everything above, plus advanced analytics, and 2.9% + 30¢ card rates
Plus
$24.50/month
Lowers card rates to 2.7% + 30¢ and adds more eCommerce features like professional email and a lower digital content and membership transaction fee
Advanced
$49.50/month
Containing all the features from previous plans, lowers card rates to 2.5$ + 30¢, offers, unlimited video hosting and storage, lowest overall fees
You can learn more about the subscription plans in our comprehensive Squarespace pricing article.
Every Shopify and Squarespace plan has its own merits, though some offer better value than others. If I were choosing a Shopify plan, I would select the Grow tier, as it balances features like staff accounts and shipping insurance without the high cost of the Advanced plan.
For Squarespace, I would opt for the Plus subscription, as it provides a robust set of eCommerce tools alongside competitive card processing rates of 2.7% + 30¢.
When comparing refund policies, Squarespace is the clear winner. It provides a 14-day money-back guarantee on all annual plans. Conversely, Shopify offers a 7-day free trial but does not provide refunds.
Squarespace is much cheaper compared to Shopify
Overall, for smaller businesses, Shopify Basic ($39.00/month) and Squarespace Basic ($9.50/month) plans have relatively similar prices. For bigger ones, Shopify Advanced might be too costly at $399/month, while Squarespace’s Advanced offers better value at $49.50/month. Given the savings, I’m giving the win to Shopify.

A critical component of any website builder is its ease of use. You want a platform that lets you focus on your business rather than spending hours navigating complex documentation. An effective tool should simplify the process of establishing your online presence.
You can begin a Shopify free trial immediately. Upon signing up, I was prompted to indicate where I intended to sell, my experience level, and the types of products I planned to offer. Following this questionnaire, I was directed to a dashboard featuring a guided checklist for store customization, product uploads, and test orders.
If you identify as an experienced user, you are given the option to import your existing store from platforms like WordPress, Etsy, or Amazon. The setup guide adjusts accordingly, offering a more streamlined and efficient path to getting started.
Squarespace begins with a questionnaire asking about your site’s purpose and your goals. Once finished, you are given the choice to select a pre-made template or utilize an AI-driven design tool.
This stage also allows you to name your site while the platform provides brief explanations of its core features.
After completing the initial setup, I tested the editors for both platforms.
Rather than a free-form drag-and-drop interface, Shopify utilizes a section-based approach. These pre-designed components are easy to manage, though they offer limited customization—a trade-off that may benefit beginners who prefer a structured environment.
Squarespace employs a drag-and-drop editor that grants users significantly more creative control. While this may require a steeper learning curve, the combination of a vast template library and flexible editing makes it a strong contender for those prioritizing design.
While I enjoyed using both platforms, I found Squarespace to be more functional overall.
Squarespace provides a better web-building experience compared to Shopify
Overall, both Shopify and Squarespace are easy to use, offering user-friendly setup and editing options. However, Squarespace wins here, as its interface and building capabilities allow for a bit more creativity and freedom than Shopify’s.
Templates are a vital element of any eCommerce builder, helping to save time while ensuring your brand looks professional. I compared the offerings of both platforms to determine which provides a better foundation for your site.
Shopify features over 1,200 templates in its marketplace. However, only 13 are free, with the remainder being premium themes ranging from $100 to $500.
Squarespace offers more than 200 templates, 45 of which are specifically tailored for eCommerce. Notably, all of these templates are available at no extra cost.
Both services provide visually appealing designs for various needs. Shopify prioritizes high-quality, sales-optimized layouts, which come at a premium price point. Squarespace offers a selection of more basic, free themes.
Shopify’s extensive collection of 1,200+ templates is robust and focused on driving conversions. These themes are designed to integrate seamlessly with your store, requiring minimal effort to set up. I also found the customization options, while restricted, to be more intuitive than those in Squarespace. The primary drawback is the significant cost.
Squarespace provides 45 eCommerce templates that offer far more design flexibility than Shopify’s, though they are more generic in style. Consequently, achieving a fully optimized eCommerce site may require more technical expertise. The advantage is that Squarespace allows for greater creative expression, making it an excellent choice for niche stores.
Your final decision will depend on your specific requirements. Shopify’s structured design is ideal for product-focused stores that don’t require heavy customization, while Squarespace is a fantastic option for unique niches like handmade goods or online courses.
While Squarespace offers a lot of customization options and an AI builder, Shopify’s templates are more tailored toward eCommerce and are easier to customize from a beginner’s point of view. Thus, in my opinion, Shopify wins.
I evaluated the eCommerce capabilities of both Shopify and Squarespace to see which is better suited for businesses selling online. My analysis focused on order fulfillment, payment processing, and marketing tools to determine how each platform supports business growth.
Shopify automates order fulfillment, handling most of the heavy lifting, including payment processing, email notifications, and customer tracking.
Squarespace offers basic fulfillment automation, primarily sending email alerts for new orders. You are responsible for managing the details, and tracking options are limited to a few providers.
Shopify offers a native payment processor, Shopify Payments, alongside integrations with over 100 third-party gateways like PayPal, Stripe, and Adyen.
Squarespace features its own native solution, Squarespace Payments, and supports various third-party processors such as Square and Stripe.
Shopify provides a wide array of marketing tools, covering email campaigns, social media integration, and SEO. It also includes AI-driven tools to assist in creating effective advertisements.
Squarespace offers email marketing features, basic SEO tools, and the option to hire a personal SEO assistant. It also integrates with Google Analytics.
Shopify boasts a massive ecosystem with over 8,000 third-party apps and integrations, including popular marketing solutions like Klaviyo and Omnisend.
Squarespace offers around 100 integrations and plugins. While this is a smaller selection, it includes essential tools like Mailchimp and TaxJar.
Shopify wins against Squarespace in terms of its eCommerce features. Thanks to over 8000 extensions, it’s endlessly customizable, great at optimizing every piece of your business, it’s really top-notch at delivering high-quality features for small and large businesses alike.
I tested both Shopify and Squarespace to compare their performance, focusing on loading speeds, stress handling, and server response times.
Regarding loading speed, Shopify demonstrated significantly faster loading than Squarespace, with a speed index of 0.9 seconds.
Conversely, Squarespace lagged at 2.252 seconds. Thus, this makes Shopify the better choice for users prioritizing quick load times.
I also evaluated each provider’s uptime and server reachability capabilities, conducting a 14-day test with probes located in Mumbai, New York, and London.
Shopify demonstrated a 100% uptime and an overall reachability of 99.96%. While each Shopify probe encountered an issue once, the results are slightly better than those of Squarespace.
Meanwhile, Squarespace delivered poorer results than Shopify, with 94.94% uptime and a server reachability of 88.31%. However, it’s worth noting that the failures were brief, suggesting issues related to DNS resolution, the network, or servers.
This shows that both Shopify and Squarespace can effectively manage moderate traffic without issues.
While Squarespace shines in server response time, Shopify is the better option if you prioritize loading speed and an overall quick user experience. Both platforms are reliable under stress, but Shopify is the better choice for most business needs. Additionally, Shopify offers more features and 3rd-party integrations for a smoother eCommerce platform creation.

Customer support is vital for eCommerce, as technical issues can directly impact your revenue. Our team evaluated how each provider handles support by comparing their available contact channels.
AI chatbot implementation
✅ Yes
❌ No
Social media/forums
✅ Yes
✅ Yes
Both services provide similar support channels, though Squarespace’s inclusion of email support is beneficial for non-urgent inquiries. Shopify has successfully integrated an AI chatbot into its help center, which I found highly effective. I also tested the response times and quality of support for both.
Shopify offers chatbot support but also allows you to request a live agent. When I tested this, I was placed in a queue with a 5-minute estimate, and an agent assisted me within 3 minutes.
I also reviewed Shopify’s community forums and help center. The forum is well-maintained and highly active, covering a vast range of common issues, which makes it a valuable resource.
With Squarespace, I was connected to an agent after a 1-minute wait, and the representative was helpful and efficient.
Like Shopify, Squarespace hosts a community forum with thousands of topics. However, it is significantly less active than Shopify’s, with public posts often going weeks without a response.
Both Shopify and Squarespace offer similar customer support options, and their response times and quality of response are similar. However, Shopify has a better-maintained community support forum and has implemented an AI chatbot in its help center, which makes looking up solutions to issues much quicker.

Moving your store from Squarespace to Shopify is a straightforward process that does not require advanced technical skills. Follow the steps below to transition your provider.
You must decide how to migrate your Squarespace store’s content and data to Shopify. I recommend exporting the Squarespace store’s content and data to Shopify using a .csv file.
Log into your Squarespace account, go to the Products & Services panel, select Products, and Export all.
Edit your .csv file depending on the version of the site you want to create. For instance, in version 7.1, you can import up to 10,000 products. In version 7.0, you can import up to 200 products per store page. Remember that products can have up to 100 variants in both versions.
Once you have your .csv file, go to your Shopify admin panel, click on Products, and then click Import.
Click Add file and select your .csv file. Deselect Publish new products to all sales channels and click Upload and continue. Review the import details, and if you’re satisfied, click Import products.
Finally, verify and organize your products after import.
Customer data is also important in the migration process. Here’s a short step-by-step guide:
In your Squarespace admin panel, click Contacts.
Expand the drop-down list and click Export all contacts, then click Confirm.
Name the .csv file and save it to your computer. Download the .csv template offered by Shopify, and then apply it to the data you got from templates.
Go to your Shopify admin panel, click on Customers, and then select Import. Next, import your customer data .csv file.
Finally, review the important details and click on Import customers. Once the data is imported, review the customer import summary, and then click on View all customers.
To migrate order history, follow the guide below:
In your Squarespace admin panel, go to Selling and then click Orders. Once there, click Download CSV.
When provided with options, make sure that only the Fulfilled orders option is selected.
Then, select All time for the Order date, and leave All products selected. Once you’ve configured the download specifications, click Download and save the .csv file to your computer.
Finally, import your order history to Shopify using either the EZ Importer or Migration Pro apps, which you can find in the Shopify App Store.
