It’s easy to make a Shirley Temple: combine lemon‑lime soda (we favor 7UP) with grenadine and a couple of maraschino cherries, and you’re done. Still, there’s a nostalgic charm to opening a canned version and sipping it, recalling the feeling of being a little sophisticate when we could order it as kids. Several brands have tried to bottle the Shirley Temple in recent years, with mixed results. 7UP’s version? A delight. It succeeds for three main reasons:
It’s extremely sweet—Shirley Temples are famously sugary.
You can still taste the lemon‑lime soda underneath the grenadine.
The flavor leans toward grenadine, not just cherry syrup, and even hints at pomegranate.
Could a prebiotic soda brand hit all those marks? We tried the new Shirley Temple Olipop to see.
New Olipop!
Pros: Olipop is a low‑sugar soda (only 5 g per can), yet it remains very sweet. The brand uses a blend of stend it works well in a Shirley Temple. This flavor essentially tastes like a Shirley Temple overloaded with grenadine, and who doesn’t love extra grenadine in their “Shirleys”? We also like that it carries a pomegranate note, not just cherry. If you already enjoy Olipop, this one is worth a try
Cons: Olipop Lemon Lime earned a spot on our best lemon‑lime sodas list mainly because we wanted a prebiotic option, not because it offers the most vibrant lemon‑lime taste. It actually resembles carbonated lemon iced tea more than a classic lemon‑lime soda. Unfortunately, the lemon‑lime component is barely noticeable in the Shirley Temple Olipop, which makes the overall experience a bit disappointing.
