Are you planning to upgrade your iPhone this year? If your goal is to own the most feature-rich device available, the decision is usually straightforward: you would opt for the latest Pro Max model, which in this case is the highly impressive iPhone 18 Pro Max.
However, Apple introduced a surprise for iOS users this year with the launch of its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo.
Now, iPhone enthusiasts face a difficult choice. I know this firsthand because I am currently in that position. Before the September Apple event, I fully intended to purchase the new Pro Max, but the debut of the Duo has caused me to reconsider.
So, should you choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max or the iPhone Duo? Both devices are powerful in their own right, as they each run on Apple’s latest A20 Pro silicon chip. Yet, both models lack certain features found in the other.
Our first-hand experience: iPhone Duo vs. iPhone 18 Pro Max
We have now spent significant time testing both devices.
Here is what we can conclude based on our real-world usage:
If you want the most powerful iPhone on the market, choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
If you want a completely new iPhone experience, choose the iPhone Duo.
As Mashable’s Stan Schroeder wrote in his iPhone Duo review, the new foldable is “the most interesting iPhone since the first one.” Apple has successfully launched its first foldable device, despite a few minor quirks. The user experience is excellent, and Apple has clearly put thought into how a larger, folding screen can enhance iOS. Schroeder rated the iPhone Duo higher than the iPhone 18; ultimately, the “cool factor” was the deciding element.
That said, the iPhone Duo does have a learning curve that requires some adjustment. The iPhone 18 Pro Max presents no such challenge. In fact, it utilizes the exact same form factor as its predecessor, the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Furthermore, the iPhone 18 Pro Max includes every available feature, whereas Apple omitted certain capabilities from the iPhone Duo to make the design work. This is particularly noticeable regarding the cameras, which is one of the primary areas where the iPhone Duo falls short.
And, of course, while neither phone is inexpensive, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is significantly more affordable than the Duo.
Still undecided on which Apple phone to choose: the iPhone 18 Pro Max or the iPhone Duo? Rather than just listing specifications and numbers, let’s examine the use cases for each device.
If you want the biggest screen…
At 6.9 inches, the iPhone 18 Pro Max features the largest traditional smartphone display. When the iPhone Duo is closed in its smartphone configuration, it is smaller, with an outer display measuring only 5.4 inches.
However, when the Duo is unfolded, the inner display offers 50 percent more screen real estate than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, measuring 7.6 inches. Ultimately, the Duo provides more screen space for your tasks.
If you want the lightest phone…
Honestly, if your priority is a lightweight smartphone, neither the iPhone 18 Pro Max nor the iPhone Duo is the right choice for you.
Both the iPhone 18 Pro Max and the iPhone Duo are quite heavy, weighing 8.78 ounces (249 grams) and 8.96 ounces (254 grams), respectively. That is correct. If you have read reviews of the iPhone 18 Pro Max, you will know that one common criticism is its weight. The iPhone Duo is even heavier.
I will say this: I upgraded from the iPhone 15 Pro Max to the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the new model is noticeably heavier. However, I can confirm that you simply get used to it. It no longer feels like a heavy phone; it just feels like the standard weight of my device. I am certain the experience will be the same for the iPhone Duo. In the end, you will adapt to it.
But if you must choose between the two and require the lightest option, you should go with the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
If cameras are of the utmost importance
The iPhone 18 Pro Max features a 48MP Pro Fusion camera system, including a 48MP Fusion Main lens, a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide lens, and a 48MP Fusion Telephoto lens. It also introduces a physical variable aperture feature for the first time. The Duo includes the same main lens—though without the variable aperture—and the same ultra-wide lens. The iPhone Duo lacks a telephoto lens, but it does feature a 12MP Center Stage selfie camera and an under-display FaceTime camera.
Apple introduced an 8x zoom with the telephoto lens on the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, and that feature has been carried over to the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Obviously, without a telephoto lens, the iPhone Duo does not offer this capability. Keep in mind that if you are upgrading from an older iPhone, you are losing not only the 4x zoom telephoto lens but also the new 8x zoom.
In terms of hardware, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the superior smartphone camera compared to the Duo. It features more rear lenses, and that physical variable aperture provides users with extensive control over lighting and depth of field.
For serious photographers or filmmakers looking for a smartphone that fits their workflow, the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s new software capabilities with Pro Controls will be a major advantage. With Pro Controls, users can adjust shutter speed, lens aperture, white balance, and more.
If you prioritize photography or videography above all else, the choice is clearly the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
I just argued that the iPhone 18 Pro Max is superior to the iPhone Duo regarding camera hardware. And that is true… for the most part.
While filmmakers will prefer the iPhone 18 Pro Max, online content creators might actually want to consider the iPhone Duo.
Yes, the iPhone 18 Pro Max has the extra lens and Pro Control features. Yes, the iPhone 18 Pro Max even has a better front-facing camera with its 18MP selfie sensor compared to the 12MP selfie camera on the iPhone Duo.
However, the foldable nature of the iPhone Duo opens up a world of creative possibilities, especially for those who produce social media-friendly content.
The iPhone Duo can be folded in various ways to act as its own stand or tripod, allowing for full-body photos and videos when working alone. The iPhone Duo also includes unique features like Smart Take, which leverages those capabilities to automatically sns of users without a countdown
When opened, the iPhone Duo’s outer display can be used as a monitor, allowing users to take selfies with the superior 48MP lens without guessing if they are in the frame.
If you are a content creator who rarely changes camera settings manually and seldom utilizes the telephoto lens, the iPhone Duo might actually be the better fit for you.
Finally, an easy one.
If you are looking for the most powerful yet most affordable device, do not consider the iPhone Duo. It is the most expensive iPhone ever released.
The Duo starts at $2,000. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is $700 cheaper at $1,299. Get the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The winner: The iPhone 18 Pro Max, duh
If mobile gaming is your priority, it seems Apple may have finally created the perfect iPhone for you.
Those who have had hands-on time with the iPhone Duo suggest the foldable was seemingly designed for gamers. The full-sized inner screen offers a perfect balance of display area and mobility. Furthermore, when turned sideways, one screen can function as a traditional landscape display, while the other serves as a full-sized game controller.
There is one caveat: it may take some time for most game developers to update their titles to support these features or create games specifically tailored for the iPhone Duo. But, all things considered, the iPhone Duo will clearly have the advantage over the iPhone 18 Pro Max when it comes to gaming.
This is an obvious choice if you are a multitasker. Go with the iPhone Duo.
The Duo functions much like an iPad, with the ability to run multiple apps side by side. The inner screen also provides an optimal experience when using features like picture-in-picture video.
Here is another simple one. iPhone Duo pre-orders sold out quickly, and the device is currently backordered. Some customers report that Apple has provided them with an estimated December delivery date, although Apple appears to be working to fulfill those orders sooner.
However, if you want a new iPhone this very minute, you will have to wait for the iPhone Duo to be restocked. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is available immediately.
You have too many iPhone accessories already
Unless you are upgrading from an iPhone 17 Pro Max to an iPhone 18 Pro Max—which share the same dimensions—you will likely need to purchase a new case if you are upgrading from an older model.
However, most other accessories should still work. Rigs for professional photography, swappable lenses, external battery packs, selfie sticks, and tripod mounts should all be compatible with your iPhone 18 Pro Max. After all, the traditional iPhone design has remained consistent for some time.
That may not be the case with a completely different-looking product like the iPhone Duo. While some accessories might work with your Duo, they were certainly not designed to fit or align perfectly with its unique design. Many accessories may not be compatible at all.
So, if you rely on many essential third-party iPhone accessories, you may want to stick with the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
You just really want a foldable device
Yeah, just buy the iPhone Duo.
Why are you even here? Get the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
