If you’re a Southerner with strong opinions about frozen desserts, you might have noticed that Blue Bell is missing from our rankings of the <a href="https://shoppixy.com/the-best-premium-credit-cards-a-side-by/” title=”The best premium credit cards: A side-by”>best ice cream. Perhaps you’ve even voiced your frustration in our comments section. We understand. Devotees of Blue Bell are incredibly passionate about the brand, and the same can be said for Dr Pepper fans. Some people are truly obsessed with the soda, including our own Jordan Myrick. Although we don’t typically sample Blue Bell products because they aren’t available in Southern California, we knew we had to try it once we heard the Texas-based creamery was launching a Dr Pepper float ice cream. We did what was necessary—sending a polite request—and the team at Blue Bell kindly shipped us a few pints on dry ice so we could give it a try. Here’s what we thought.
I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from an ice cream designed to mimic a soda float, but this wasn’t it. Rather than vanilla ice cream paired with an icy Dr Pepper swirl, Blue Bell Dr Pepper ice cream is a fully blended, creamy combination of vanilla and Dr Pepper-flavored ice cream—there is no iciness to be found. While Jordan said they may have preferred the concentrated flavor of a granita-esque Dr Pepper swirl, I absolutely loved the creamy Dr Pepper ice cream. What a wild idea!
Pros: The biggest advantage is that this stuff is delicious. The ice cream itself is wonderfully rich and sweet. I’ve enjoyed Blue Bell ice cream during trips to the South, and this served as a great reminder of why people are so obsessed with it. While Dr Pepper is famously a blend of 23 flavors, I would argue that cherry and amaretto are the most prominent notes in this pint. It’s excellent and makes the experience feel like eating an ice cream sundae topped with a cherry.
Cons: We have some cherry haters in the house who felt it was a bit too cherry forward. Another taster noted a slight artificial-sugar finish and wished for more depth. Personally? I’d choose a bowl of this over a messy Dr Pepper float any day.
